Meet the CapeVineMaster Team: Your Guides to South Africa’s Wine Adventure

Welcome to CapeVineMaster.co.za, where South Africa’s wine culture comes alive with a swirl, a sip, and a whole lot of passion! As we gear up for our grand relaunch on May 1, 2025, we’re thrilled to introduce the team behind the scenes—your fellow wine enthusiasts who are here to guide you through the vineyards, cellars, and stories of the Cape Winelands and beyond. Think of us as your trusty sommeliers, minus the stuffy attitude, ready to share a glass and a laugh while exploring the world of wine. From monthly online tastings to weekly blogs and global wine news, we’re pouring our hearts into making CapeVineMaster your go-to destination for all things vino. Let’s meet the crew and dive into what we’ve got in store!

Who We Are: The CapeVineMaster Crew

At CapeVineMaster, we’re a small but mighty team of wine lovers, storytellers, and curious palates, led by our Editor-in-Chief, Marthunis J. Barnard. Marthunis is the heart and soul of our operation, a self-professed wine novice who’s on a mission to take everyday wine drinkers on a shared journey of discovery. When he’s not sipping Sauvignon Blanc by the Breede River or scribbling notes about a bold Pinotage, Marthunis juggles his role as a wine journalist and industry consultant, bringing a fresh, relatable perspective to the table. His mantra? Wine is for everyone, and every glass tells a story. His recent visit to Viljoensdrift Estate—complete with a river cruise and a cheese platter—sparked the vision for CapeVineMaster as a platform that celebrates the joy of wine without the pretension.

Joining Marthunis is Lize van der Merwe, our content curator and resident foodie. Lize is a wizard at pairing wines with everything from biltong to bobotie, and her weekly blogs on food pairing are sure to inspire your next dinner party. With a background in hospitality and a knack for spotting the next big culinary trend, she’s the one who’ll convince you that a Chenin Blanc can elevate your braai to gourmet status. Lize’s enthusiasm is infectious, though we’re still working on her tendency to sneak extra cheese samples during farm visits!

Our viticulture guru, Thabo Mokoena, brings a deep love for the science and soul of winemaking. A trained viticulturist with a soft spot for sustainable farming, Thabo’s blogs will take you behind the scenes of South Africa’s vineyards, exploring topics like soil health, organic practices, and the magic of terroir. He’s the guy who’ll explain why a Stellenbosch Cabernet tastes different from a Franschhoek one, all while keeping it fun and approachable. Fair warning: Thabo’s passion for fynbos ecosystems might lead to impromptu vineyard hikes, so bring comfy shoes if you meet him!

Rounding out the team is Anika Patel, our news hound and global wine watcher. Anika’s got her finger on the pulse of the wine world, from Napa Valley’s latest blends to Tuscany’s organic revolution. Her weekly industry news updates will keep you in the know about trends, awards, and quirky stories—like the time a French winery trained sheep to trim their vines. With a background in journalism and a knack for digging up hidden gems, Anika ensures CapeVineMaster isn’t just about South Africa—it’s your window to the global wine scene. Her only flaw? She’s still mastering the art of opening a bottle without a corkscrew.

What We’re Bringing to the Table

CapeVineMaster.co.za isn’t just a website; it’s a vibrant community for anyone who loves wine, food, and adventure. Our relaunch on May 1, 2025, marks the start of an exciting new chapter, packed with content and experiences designed to spark your curiosity and fill your glass with joy. Here’s a peek at what we’ve got planned:

Monthly Online Wine Tastings: Sip Along with Us!

Every month, we’re hosting a virtual wine tasting that’s like a party in your living room—without the cleanup. Led by winemakers, sommeliers, or our very own Marthunis, these tastings will introduce you to South Africa’s finest varietals, from zesty Sauvignon Blancs to velvety Pinotages. We’ll guide you through tasting notes, share pairing ideas, and spill the stories behind the wines. Whether you’re a newbie or a seasoned sipper, our tastings are all about fun and discovery. Grab a bottle (we’ll send suggestions ahead of time), join the Zoom, and let’s toast to new favorites! Our first tasting kicks off in May, and we’re already eyeing a bubbly MCC to start things with a pop.

Weekly Blogs: A Journey Through Wine and Beyond

Our blog is the heart of CapeVineMaster, delivering fresh content every week to fuel your wine obsession. Here’s what you can expect:

  • Wine Farm Adventures: Marthunis and the team will take you on virtual tours of South Africa’s wine estates, like the serene Viljoensdrift with its river cruises or the historic Groot Constantia. Expect vivid storytelling, practical tips for visitors, and a critical yet positive take on what makes each farm special.

  • Things to Do: From picnics in Paarl to hiking trails in Franschhoek, we’ll highlight activities that pair perfectly with a wine weekend. Lize is already planning a post on the best vineyard picnic spots—spoiler: bring stretchy pants for the cheese platters!

  • Viticulture Insights: Thabo will geek out (in the best way) about the science of winemaking, covering topics like sustainable viticulture, new grape varieties, and why 2025’s harvest is shaping up to be a stunner.

  • Food Pairing Guides: Lize’s mouthwatering posts will teach you how to match wines with South African classics and global cuisines. Think Rooibos-smoked snoek with a crisp Colombar or dark chocolate tart with a ruby Cabernet.

  • Wine Comment: Marthunis will share his novice-to-expert journey, offering relatable reviews and tips for everyday wine drinkers. His take on a Muskapino dessert wine? “Like sipping summer in a glass!”

Weekly Industry News: The World of Wine, Uncorked

Anika’s got you covered with weekly updates on what’s shaking in the global wine scene. From breakthrough vintages in Bordeaux to South Africa’s latest Decanter Awards sweep, we’ll keep you informed and entertained. Expect quirky stories (did you hear about the AI sommelier in California?), trend forecasts (orange wine is having a moment), and shout-outs to local heroes like the Robertson winery that just went fully solar. Our news posts are short, snappy, and packed with insights to make you the smartest wine nerd at the braai.

The Ultimate Wine Farm Directory

Our revamped website will feature a comprehensive listing of South Africa’s wine farms, from boutique gems in Swartland to iconic estates in Stellenbosch. Each profile includes tasting room details, visitor activities, and booking info, making it easy to plan your next wine adventure. We’re categorizing farms by region, varietals, and experiences (think “dog-friendly” or “river views”), so you can find exactly what you’re craving. Marthunis is personally ensuring every listing feels like a mini love letter to the farm, with Thabo and Lize chiming in on viticulture and foodie highlights.

Why We’re Doing This

At CapeVineMaster, we believe wine isn’t just a drink—it’s a gateway to connection, culture, and joyventure. Marthunis started CapeVineMaster because he saw a need for a platform that speaks to the average wine drinker, not just the experts. Inspired by his own journey—from timid taster to confident explorer—he wanted a space where everyone feels welcome to explore South Africa’s wine heritage. Lize joined to share her love for food and wine pairings, Thabo to champion sustainable viticulture, and Anika to connect local stories to the global stage. Together, we’re building a community that celebrates the Cape Winelands’ beauty, diversity, and warmth, with a dash of humor and a whole lot of heart.

A Few Critiques (Because We’re Keeping It Real)

We’re not perfect (yet!), and we’re always learning. Our online tastings are a blast, but we’re still fine-tuning the tech to avoid those awkward “you’re on mute” moments. Our blogs are packed with passion, but we’re working on adding more visuals—think vineyard photos and pairing plates—to bring the stories to life. And while our wine farm directory is growing, we’re hustling to include more off-the-beaten-path estates. We’re a small team, so bear with us as we pour our all into making CapeVineMaster the best it can be.
